The Mountaineers finished a disappointing 7-5 this season. An early loss to Boston College, I felt, set the tempo for the entire season. If they could have won that game, who knows what might have happened. None the less, a big win over Virginia Tech bred new life into the EER's. But the big games (Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Pitt), West Virginia could not win. Next season should be West Virginia's best shot at an alliance bowl in a long time, returning the core of the offense.

Running back Amos Zereoue skipped the temptation of entering the 1998 NFL draft, great for WVU fans, bad for WVU opponents. Zereoue finished third in the nation in rushing in 1997 and is considered to be one of the front-runners for the 1998 Heisman Trophy. Also returning is QB Marc Bulger, and WR's Shawn Foreman and David Saunders. The first game on the EER's 1998 schedule will prove just how much of a contender they can be: Ohio State.
